Network Technician – Federal Government | Canberra

A major Federal Government department is seeking an experienced Network Technician to support and maintain secure, reliable, and high?performing network services across a large and complex ICT environment.

This role is ideal for someone who enjoys hands?on technical work, structured troubleshooting, and working across multi?vendor network environments.

 

About the Role

You will support the department’s LAN, WAN, and Wireless networks, assisting with installation, configuration, maintenance, and troubleshooting of network infrastructure. You’ll help ensure stable connectivity for end?users, contribute to project and operational activities, and maintain accurate technical documentation.

 

Key Responsibilities

  • Support and maintain enterprise network infrastructure in line with agreed service levels
  • Assist with installation, configuration, and maintenance of network connections and services
  • Troubleshoot and resolve network issues using structured methodologies
  • Provision new network connections following established processes
  • Support external data service providers to ensure contracted service levels are met
  • Maintain accurate documentation including network diagrams, IPAM, SOPs, and As?Built documentation
  • Contribute to operational and project-based networking activities across wired and wireless environments
 

Technical Skills & Experience

  • Experience supporting LAN, WAN, and wireless network environments
  • Hands-on experience installing, configuring, and maintaining network infrastructure and equipment
  • Experience working within multi-vendor environments (e.g., Juniper, HP, Cisco)
  • Strong analytical and troubleshooting skills using structured approaches (e.g., OSI model)
  • Experience applying security patches, updating firmware, and maintaining firewall rules
  • Familiarity with network monitoring tools such as SolarWinds, Nagios, or CheckMK, including node management and data collection
  • Strong communication skills and ability to work effectively within a team
 

Desirable

  • 5+ years’ experience in a Network Technician or similar role
  • Previous hands-on experience in LAN/WAN maintenance within enterprise environments
  • Certifications such as CompTIA Network+, CCNA, or CompTIA A+
 

Mandatory Requirements

  • Australian Citizenship
  • Active NV1 Security Clearance
  • Class C Driver Licence
